Verb Patterns: Verb + Verb = ?

Verb + verb = ?

What happens when two verbs meet?  Is it an arranged marriage?  Or love at first sight?

Today I am talking about what happens when you need to use two verbs together in a sentence. Is the second verb followed by to + infinitive or an –ing verb?  There are some simple rules to follow that should help you to figure it out for yourself.

When the first verb is practical, organised, efficient, looking to the future, it is followed by to + infinitive.  The arranged marriage!

When the first verb is focused on the experience in the now or nostalgia for the past, then it is followed by -ing.  Love at first sight!

Here are the 10 verbs that feature in the video:

  • Want
  • Need
  • Would like
  • Promise
  • Refuse
  • Dislike
  • Discuss
  • Suggest
  • Practise
  • Avoid

As always, comments can be left under the video on YouTube.

Until next time!
