How To Talk To Your Child’s Teacher

If you are a parent, there will be times when you need to speak to your child’s teacher. Those parent-teacher meetings can be quite daunting, especially if English is not your first language. I know they are for me, and I am a native English speaker!

You want to express yourself, but not make the teacher feel defensive.

  • How do I ask the right questions?
  • How do I communicate my concerns?
  • How do I say what I want without sounding rude?

This video will help you plan for your next parent-teacher meeting so that you don’t need to feel nervous and unprepared.  You will be able to express yourself calmly and confidently and get the answers you need.

In this video I talk about:

8 polite ways to make requests
5 general questions to ask
3 ways to politely express concern or anger
4 ways to enquire about your child’s Special Educational Needs Provision

That makes a total of 20! More than enough, I would think!

PRACTICE EXERCISE

  1. Write your own sentences using some of the sentence prompts in the video.
  2. Practise speaking in front of a mirror or record yourself on your phone.
  3. Write your sentences in the YouTube comments section, so that I can give you feedback (leave out your child’s actual name!).
  4. Go to your meeting and “nail it” – that means to do it exactly right, which I am sure you will!

As always, questions and comments can be left under the video on YouTube.

Until next time!
