Big and great – not the most imaginative of adjectives, I know! But they are still quite useful, as they can be applied in a surprising number of ways and in different collocations.
We use big to describe things that are large, especially physically. That’s easy, we all know that one! A big car, a big house etc.
We can use great to describe something that is especially impressive.
Examples:
– We danced in the great hall of the manor house.
– The queen lives in a great palace.
So not just large but massive, imposing.
