In this lesson, I talk about something that probably creates the most confusion and errors in English writing – the dreaded apostrophe!
When and where do we use apostrophes in our writing? Firstly, let’s talk about why we use apostrophes.
Apostrophes are there to show us that one or more letters are missing. That is why they exist. But the rules have changed from time to time because English is a language that has evolved over thousands of years and has a lot of different influences. How we use them goes in and out of fashion. So, these are the rules, as I understand them, as of right now!
Watch my lesson to learn how apostrophes are used in the following ways:
- contractions
- singular possession
- plural possession
- in letters and numbers
Until next time!
