For & Since

For and Since – these two words are often confused by English learners, and it does take a bit of practice to get them right!

We can use the present perfect or present perfect continuous with ‘for’ and ‘since’, especially when we talk about something that happened up until the present or is still happening.

For

Use ‘for’ when you talk about a period of time.  If you want to say how long the action took, then use for.

Since

We use ‘since’ to show a specific point in time or when an action started, and it’s always up until the present time.
