False Antonyms – Confusing Prefixes

In this lesson, I go through some pairs of words that look like they should be antonyms. However, the word pairs have quite similar meanings.  They are closer to being synonyms.

These are called False antonyms or pseudo antonyms.  In the past I have been quite puzzled about these words myself, so it must be also quite confusing for English learners.

Watch the video for 5 examples of false antonyms.

Here are the words that we talk about:

  1. Flammable / Inflammable
  2. Terminate / Exterminate
  3. Passive / Impassive
  4. Valuable / Invaluable
  5. Genius / Ingenious
